Ali and her friends have been studying dinosaurs in school, and Ali's favorite teacher delights in telling me that Ali has somehow associated my childhood as the same era as when dinosaurs roamed the earth. We both find this amusing and although we have both tried to correct this misconception, Ali persists in her belief (or maybe perhaps she does this because she enjoys the attention!).
In keeping with this theme of history and given all of the wonderful context around us, Ali and I have taken some initial steps into what I hope is a lifelong journey into the history and culture of her rich American heritage. For instance, we have been reading age appropriate books about the current President (more precisely, Pres. Obama's daughters and their quest for a dog and a beautiful little book authored by Obama) and books on various sites such as the Liberty Bell, the White House and the Statue of Liberty.
Thus, on Tuesday, we met up Ali's two closest "buds" and their Moms for an unofficial field trip to the Liberty Bell and the National Constitution Center, where they watched a movie on the Constitution and major presidents and the ongoing protection of liberty. The movie, of course, was a big hit, as was seeing the Liberty Bell and signing their names in the guest book at the National Constitution Center (all three signed on double lines, so it is clear they all carry some of John Hancock's lineage in their bones - LOL).
